3 Basic Techniques to Get Better Results From People Who Work For You

Lets face it, you are only as successful as your team, so if you want to be successful, you need to help your team be successful first. Here are three basic techniques you should use to help them be successful:
  1. Hire people who know what they are doing (and know more than you do about their specialty) and then give them guidance and support to let them be successful. Insulate them from distractions to the best of your ability and give them the tools and resources they need to do their job. That’s the best way for both you and your staff to succeed.
  2. Have your staff focus on the things they are good at. Get them support for things they don't do well or give it to someone else. A sure way for everyone to fail is forcing someone to spend time trying to do what they aren't good at while the things they are good at go neglected. They'll be happier and more productive.
  3. Don't treat everyone the same. We are all different and need different things, are motivated differently, have different strengths, etc. Understand and adapt to your staff to get the best out of them.
While some of these come from my own experiences managing a team and being successful because they were good at what they do, I also read a book early in my career that helped me look at being a manager differently.
The book "First, Break All The Rules : What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently" looks at managing in a very different way. Based on real-life studies, Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman do an excellent job of debunking many myths of management and outlining a better way of managing staff to get their best out of them. If you're interested in the book, it's available on Amazon.
